Reverse engineering your perfect business
Most people do this backwards
The Backwards Problem
Most solo founders start with an idea.
Then try to fit their life around it.
This is completely backwards.
Your business should serve your life.
Not control it.
Here's how to design it properly.

Sutro is an AI app builder that creates custom internal tools and software from structured requirements, not just prompts.
Traditional options for software are slow to build or poorly tailored off-the-shelf tools. Sutro changes that. By capturing your team’s goals and workflows up front, Sutro uses LLMs to generate software that actually fits your needs without months of development, vendor negotiations, or complex no-code interfaces.
Whether you're replacing spreadsheets or streamlining operations, Sutro helps teams move faster, reduce SaaS sprawl, and build software that works exactly the way they do.
The Reverse Engineering Framework
Instead of asking "What business should I start?"
Ask "What life do I want to live?"
Then work backwards.
Step 1: Design Your Ideal Day
Get specific about what you actually want.
Not what you think you should want.
Start with time:
What time do you want to wake up?
How many hours do you want to work?
When do you want to be done for the day?
How much travel is acceptable?
What about weekends?
Most people never think this through.
Then wonder why they hate their business.
Step 2: Identify Your Energy Patterns
When are you most productive?
When do you crash?
Build your business around your natural rhythms.
Not against them.
Morning person?
Don't start a business requiring evening client calls.
Afternoon slump?
Don't schedule important work then.
Night owl?
Don't commit to early morning meetings.
Your energy is your most valuable resource.
Design around it.
Step 3: Define Your Interaction Preferences
How much human contact do you actually want?
Be honest.
Some people thrive on constant interaction.
Others prefer deep, focused work alone.
Neither is wrong.
But building the wrong business for your personality is.
High interaction businesses:
Consulting
Coaching
Event planning
Community building
Low interaction businesses:
Content creation
Software development
E-commerce
Digital products
Pick what energizes you.
Not what drains you.
Step 4: Map Your Skill Zones
Identify three types of skills:
Zone 1: Things you're naturally good at
Zone 2: Things you enjoy learning
Zone 3: Things you hate doing
Build a business that lives in Zones 1 and 2.
Avoid Zone 3 completely.
Don't try to become someone you're not.
Amplify who you already are.
Step 5: The Lifestyle Stress Test
Before committing to any business idea.
Run it through these questions:
Can I do this from my preferred location?
Does this require working hours I hate?
Will this drain or energize me daily?
Can I handle the customer interactions required?
Does this play to my natural strengths?
If any answer is no.
Find a different business.
The Common Traps
Don't build a business because:
It worked for someone else
It seems profitable
You think you "should" do it
It's trendy right now
Build a business because:
It fits your desired lifestyle
You can do it sustainably
It uses your natural abilities
You can execute it consistently
The Sustainability Test
Ask yourself this critical question:
"Can I do this every day for the next 5 years without burning out?"
If the answer isn't a clear yes.
Keep looking.
Passion fades.
Lifestyle preferences don't.
You have permission to:
Work the hours you want
Avoid types of work you hate
Build around your natural patterns
Say no to "good" opportunities that don't fit
Prioritize lifestyle over maximum profit
Your business should improve your life.
Not complicate it.
The Long-Term Vision
When you reverse engineer properly:
Work feels natural, not forced
You have energy for growth
Customers sense your authenticity
Success becomes sustainable
You build something lasting
Most importantly, you'll actually enjoy the journey.
Not just dream about the destination.
Start with your life.
The business will follow.
